Work assignments are in the areas of housekeeping (most consistently required task), lawn and grounds upkeep, pool maintenance and reservations and front desk duties. Many of our students in the past have secured evening jobs as well at other locations in Estes Park for days off or after regular work hours. We support this, with approval of your supervisor, providing that you remain committed to the Black Canyon Inn as your primary responsibility. As your sponsor and provider of housing, that commitment is required.

Because most of our guests speak only English, preference will be given to applicants fluent in English. A telephone interview will be arranged prior to a final decision on offering you a position to verify your conversational skills.

We want serious applicants who can commit to the whole season. Our high season typically runs from June well into October.

All employees are responsible for their transportation to Estes Park. We can assist you in scheduling a shuttle from the airport in Denver once you are able to provide flight arrival times. A round-trip ticket costs approximately $50.00. They do not operate 24 hours. If you have a very late arrival, you may have to stay in Denver at the airport or in a nearby hotel. We will advise you, if that need arises.

While employed at the Black Canyon Inn, all employees must comply with all local, state, and federal laws. Any violation of such laws will result in immediate dismissal. Please note that unlike Europe, the legal drinking age for alcoholic beverages is 21 years of age. You will be required to show proof of age to purchase alcoholic drinks in any liquor store, bar, restaurant or night club in Colorado.

Wages/Paychecks

A weekly work schedule is posted for each employee. Unexcused absenteeism or tardiness is not tolerated and repeated occurrences will lead to dismissal.

All employees are expected to perform all duties up to the expectation of our guests. We offer very special accommodations and we must all insure that the smallest details are attended. Your work activities will be reviewed at 7, 14, 30 and 60 days to assure adequate execution of your duties. Any deficiencies, will be discussed with you by a supervisor and suggestions made for improvement. I cannot overly stress the importance of committed execution of all tasks assigned to each employee. The Black Canyon Inn wants you to have a memorable experience during your stay in Estes Park, but it cannot be at the expense of your work position.

You will be paid weekly on Wednesday afternoons. Pay periods begin each Monday through Sunday with checks presented at the end of the day on Wednesday. Beginning pay is $7.00 per hour, and you can expect to work between 35 and 40 hours per week. We offer merit pay increases upon review of job performance. Last year the majority of the staff, received an increase of $1.00 per hour in two steps for over 1/2 of their term. I give you this information so you can estimate your income potential providing adequate job performance.

As an employee in the United States, your wages are subject to federal and state income taxes. those are deductions made by all employers by law from your gross earnings. You can estimate 12% of your gross wage will go to the government.

Housing

Housing is provided exclusively on site. Our staff cabins are above the norm for employees in Estes Park. With each cabin having two twin beds and a private bathroom and porch, it offers more privacy for individuals than most other employers are able to offer. The Inn is also in a spectacular setting with views from your housing of Lumpy Ridge and the Mummy Range in Rocky Mountain National Park. Our property is located about 1 km or 1/2 mile from the center of town as well as the nearest supermarket.

Rent for each employee is $35.00 per week and is deducted from your paycheck each week. First and last weeks are prorated based on the number of days the cabins are occupied during that pay period. No allowance is made for days during contract that you may be away from your cabin.

A common area including kitchen, television room and a reading/sitting room is available to all staff members. HOWEVER, it is every person's responsibility to maintain these common areas in a clean manner. This has been the most difficult problem we have faced with summer employees. Anyone who does not tidy up after themselves, may lose privileges in these areas. The kitchen has refrigerator, microwave oven, stove, dishwasher, sink, dishes, pots and pans, and coffeemaker.

Housing and common areas are for the use of our employees only. In the event of dismissal or leaving your position before the end of your contract, you will be required to vacate your housing within 24 hours. You may entertain guests as long as they are accompanied by you when on the property and do not impose on others.

As employee housing units are in the proximity of guest areas, all gatherings and activities must be kept to a minimum noise level after dark.

If you become an employee, you can be contacted by mail at the enclosed address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail messages will be forwarded to you. Access to email can be done through the local library. Outgoing phone service can be by credit card or phone cards from a phone in the lodging office lobby, during off work hours.
